Excerpt

"One of our more popular destinations in recent times has been the small planet Terra. In the seventh arm of the Gobol there is a typical spiral galaxy. Tucked away in one of its off-center whorls lies this gem of a spheroid, the third from its yellow star. We highly recommend it for lovers of beauty and diversity of life forms.

Out of a long-ago scatter seeding, one took root and evolved into tens of millions of species, all sharing the same cellular foundation. They fall into two principal types, stationary forms which directly consume solar radiation (the so-called plants) and mobile forms (animals) that ingest either the plants or each other. Within these two categories are life-forms of fantastic beauty and variety. The plants are frequently decorated with colorful tufts of petals. These occur in an unimaginable variety of forms, colors, and, most wonderfully, scents of intoxicating delightfulness.

Each and every one of the animals, ranging from the tiny to the sizeable, is constructed with jewel-like precision in each of its parts. Some fly through the atmosphere in perfect grace, on iridescent wings of every color of the spectrum. Others are specialized to swim, solitary or in groups numbering in the thousands, through the transparent liquid which covers about two thirds of the world's surface. This liquid, consisting solely of hydrogen and oxygen in the ratio of two to one, is the essential nutrient of each of the planet's life forms. It is distributed over the world's surface by an elegant mechanism of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. This results in myriad delightful features of flowing liquid, here collecting in pools and there cascading over rocks.

This essential liquid is itself highly entertaining, and capable of giving rise to such diverting phenomena as “rainbows” (see image) and “snow.” Do not fail to appreciate the perfection and marvelous variety of the tiny crystalline flakes of which this snow is composed.

Your vehicle for your brief visit to this world, through our special arrangement with the local galactic council, will be the body of one of the species of animals! Yes, you will leap with joy across the surface of the planet, mingling with animals of your own and other species. You will delight in the exploration of natural features of truly inspired beauty, such as “mountains,” “canyons,” and “forests.” (see images.)

The species provided for our incarnation is, frankly, not one of the more agile or elegant in its physical form, but has been chosen for its unrivaled sensory abilities. Five separate input channels allow you to experience with tremendous immediacy and clarity each of the countless marvels of this planet. By way of example, “hearing” allows you to perceive the fantastic array of subtle vibrations of the atmosphere by which both your host species and others actually communicate with one another. Sometimes these vibrations are used to convey essential information, and at other times, they are generated and appreciated by this species purely for delightful amusement."

... why, you may ask?
About a week ago, I was trying to explain to my husband why I believe in reincarnation. He doesn't really believe in God, so that was a tough nut to crack, but in the end, we agreed that it wouldn't be such an out-there idea that there might be higher, more evolved entities in the universe who use our planet and our bodies as a kind of playground or learning institute in order to evolve even more (by facing the challenges of the material world). Of course, they wouldn't remember their higher origins because that would take away the challenge. Some people, like Buddha or Jesus, were more connected to the 'source' and would therefore be enlightened humans amongst a billion others who wouldn't remember anything about their true nature. In other words, he said he'd believe in those entities being aliens, and I said I believe in those entities being souls... our souls. Nothing alien about it :)
Cue to a few days later, when the author of this book contacted me to review it. I looked at the blurb and thought it looked funny and interesting, so I said yes. I couldn't believe my eyes when the first chapter was dealing with the EXACT same topic I discussed with my husband a few days earlier!
Needless to say I was immediately hooked. I loved reading this book, I thought it was funny AND spiritual AND philosophical AND sci-fi... all of which I enjoy. The only thing I had a gripe with was the fact that none of the characters really managed to grab me, because they were all dealt with in such short chapters that I didn't feel their emotions. It had a kind of 'floaty' feeling about it. I personally think this story could have worked better in the form of a novella or short story, because despite the interesting ideas & angles used to look at the state of affairs on Earth, it ran a bit out of steam at some point.
I can't really compare this book to anything I have read before, but I'm sure fans of Ray Bradbury-style sci-fi will love this. Very original!

Round Trip David Katz 9780988433663 Books Reviews

To set the context, I am the least spiritual person you will find and I do not believe in any New Age ideas. So if somebody had described the book to me in detail, I would have probably rolled my eyes and never given it a chance. But I did read it and thoroughly enjoyed it.

First, the main concept driving the entire book is quite original incorporeal aliens come to Earth as tourists to enjoy the beauty of our planet and its unprecedented biodiversity. To enable a full immersion in the life on Earth, the galactic travel agency places these aliens in human bodies and wipes their memories so that they think they are regular human beings.

Secondly, I actually enjoyed the spiritual undercurrents of the book. The message is moving and uplifting, whether you believe in New Age stuff or don't. I can easily see how some people would be influenced by this book, and it would be a good thing because the message is so positive.

I think people who have read Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land and Asimov's The Gods Themselves will recognize elements of both those books in Round Trip. Which doesn't make Round Trip one bit less original or enjoyable.
Well the author wants feedback, so here goes. I enjoyed reading this book! It is engaging, interesting and fun. I would recommend it on that basis.

I would however agree with the reviewer who didn't like the end. The end was weak. I could also have done with more description of the characters, earthly and otherwise. Like, hair color, physique, etc. Not to mention background. But this is a light read. There are profound ideas, and some intense world events, but overall the ambiance is light, almost superficial. I'm not sure that's what Mr. Katz was intending, but if he wants to be taken more seriously he needs to dig down a little further and not just move from one event to the next. And this book is full of events!

But the general premise is interesting enough that I can come up with four stars for this one. I was kind of looking around for a sequel due to the ambiguity of the ending. But nope! I got very curious about the otherworldly characters and their home, but it appears that is not to be divulged.
I have to ask myself how something so seemingly whimsical can feel so true? I love Science Fiction but I can't honestly call put this novel in that Genre. To me if feels like something I like to call Met-Fi (short for Metaphysical Fiction); but since the author decided to put the words "A Contemporary Science Fiction Adventure" in the title I won't begrudge his classification of his own work.

After finishing it (I think I probably devoured it) I found my thoughts frequently reviewing the story. I just could not stop thinking about it. For some reason, some people tried to compare it to "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", but I don't think that is fair. Some might try to hold it up to "Stranger in a Strange Land" and honestly that would be a bit closer. Not because of the style or content, but more because of how our "higher selves" might appear to our more mortal aspects of ourselves.

I will almost certainly re-read this and probably soon. It has a feel to it similar to Jason Matthews' "The Little Universe" and its sequel "Jim's Life". Met-Fi is not for everyone, but I'm beginning to be a big fan.
