This Won't Hurt A Bit The 1st Lenny Moss Mystery A Lenny Moss Mystery edition by Timothy Sheard Literature Fiction eBooks

This is a refreshing mystery novel. The heroes are not police, or private detectives or even lawyers; they are ordinary, hard working hospital workers that in order to get a fellow worker out of jail after being wrongly accused of murder, have to solve the case on their own. The lead "sleuth," Lenny Moss, a hospital custodian, is also the union representative and has helped many of his co-workers accused of wrong-doing by the bosses in the drastically understaffed hospital. He fights tooth and nail to get his fellow members out of trouble. He's respected by most of the hospital staff who aid him in his search for the truth but is hated by the bosses. This novel is not only an intriguing mystery, but a very real glimpse into what really goes on in America's hospitals. The author, Timothy Sheard, worked for many years as a nurse in a hospital. I'm now reading the second mystery in the series of seven, and it's even better than the first.

For a long time, Joe West, head of hospital security has wanted to see Regis fry. Now he's hanging the murder charge of a resident doctor on him, and Lenny, a custodian and union steward, has been appointed by the people he represents to find out what really happened.

The characters in this include at least one nurse -- Gary, five doctors -- a psychiatrist, a urologist, a gynecologist, a general practitioner, and a vascular surgeon. The housekeeping staff, residents, and medical students. Also are Regis' wife and other individuals who make up the zany folks in This Won't Hurt A Bit.

The author captures the underpinnings of a hospital. From the creepy, darkened dungeon-like atmosphere of the not-so-used parts of the hospital basement with pipes running immediately overhead to the lives of the ones who keep the hospital clean and presentable. The cleaning staff, morgue, and other not-so-pretty departments are the ones relegated to the furthest reaches only to show up to spit-shine the prettier halls and rooms and then back to the underground where their supervisor's office is or to clock out at the end of the day.

We find Lenny in situations and places which in "real" life, most of us wouldn't dare attempt even at a time when security wasn't as tight as it is today. Determined to prove their co-worker Regis innocent, other employees assist Lenny in acts which could cost them their respective jobs.

Though the story was a bit too long and some of the tedium of every day life could have been omitted to shorten it, I thoroughly enjoyed the relationships between Lenny and his friends.
An interesting book, with a detailed approach to a big hospital and to the city I know so well, Philadelphia (since I live in it). Interesting also to have a custodian as the detective, although what makes him interesting is that he is a tremendously dedicated union steward. I bought the second book, which is no more than entertaining, and not well constructed at all.
I found the storyline to be very engaging, and I love the characters. All this author really needs is a good copy editor. It was jarring to have things happen like the paint scraper jumping from his hand to his belt, his milk going sour in one paragraph and then he's frothing milk in the next, and then he goes from wearing normal clothing to his uniform toward the end. There were a few things like that, and lots of typos. Other than the editing issues, the book was good.
Lenny Moss is a forgettable guy wielding a mop and pushing a buffer in a big Philadelphia teaching hospital. At age thirty he's an excellent custodian and an even more effective union steward. Lenny has a knack for getting his fellow workers out of trouble with the bosses, even when they're in the wrong.

So when Regis Devoe, the black guy who works in the laundry, gets accused of murder, the hospital workers beg Lenny to prove Reg's innocence by finding the real murderer.

The author introduces the murder victim in a most ingenious fashion. The corpse surfaces as a subject for dissection in an anatomy class, battered beyond recognition like an accident victim. But as it happens, a young woman medical student who slept with the victim does recognize him - by his genitals. Randy Sparks was a brilliant third-year medical resident who had disappeared a month earlier.

Lenny's investigation centers on five doctors. Who but a doctor, after all, would know how to smuggle a corpse into the anatomy lab, fill it with pickling juice and enter it into the computer system?

The charming thing about this book is Lenny's network of housekeepers and other workers who feed him clues and cover his back. Lenny has friends all over the hospital whose jobs and benefits he's protected. It's really a battle between the arrogant doctors and mean supervisors - and the invisible service workers that keep the hospital clean and functioning.

This Won't Hurt a Bit is an enjoyable read - and an amusing exposé of work life inside a hospital. Timothy Sheard, a veteran critical care nurse, is in a unique position to give us the dirt on the docs.
