A stubborn, strong-willed, disinherited aristocrat, Hal leaves the imperial court at an early age to make her living with her sword. Finally, she seems to have found all she needs in life – that is until she meets Meracad, the daughter of a wealthy merchant. The two girls are about to find out that true love comes at a price.
Now includes the short prequel, Orla
Hal is young, naive and hungry for adventure. A chance encounter with a thief leads her into the dangerous underworld of Riverside, and to Orla - a battle-weary soldier. Passions flare as summer heat bakes the city streets. But Orla is fierce and possessive in her love. Will Hal survive it?
Hal The Duellist Trilogy Book 1 eBook Kate Cudahy
The story is mostly told from Hal's point of view, while some parts change to Meracad and a few secondary characters' perspectives. Halanya "Hal" Thæc is an disinherited aristocrat by choice so she could become a professional duellist, which provides her with no luxuries but allows her to do what she loves, and live the life she wants as courtiers look at her with disdain. Her simple life, which consists of training, engaging in duels, and enjoying her free time with her friends, changes when Meracad Léac, an influential merchant's daughter, arrives.Meracad craves a life of freedom, much like the one Hal leads, away from her ruthless father's influence, wanting to escape the fate he has for her to further improve his wealth and position. The two meet and fall in love, a bit too fast if you ask me (little complain I have with some books!), and just as quickly discover how much they'll have to risk to be together.
Even though it kind of lost me for a while after the first quarter/half, in general it was a very enjoyable read, with fun moments, some action, and nice chemistry between the characters.
The ending is open, and I already knew there was another book, but thankfully there's no cliffhanger, something I feared as I reached the last few pages (I don't like them! I like complete stories!), and left me interested in reading the sequel. :>

Hal The Duellist Trilogy Book 1 eBook Kate Cudahy Reviews
I really wanted to like this book. But the main character is unbelievably juvenile, and the supporting characters so enabling, that I couldn't stay invested in the story.
I enjoyed the book enough to stay up late a couple of nights. There was some predictability but still enough intrigue. I would have liked a bit more sexual content so it didn't feel as if I were reading teen fan fiction. Bottom line though, I appreciate anything with LGBT theme as we need more representation even if it is fictional.
I'm halfway through the second book and I've got to tell you Hal is an idiot. Her father not much better. Meracad is the brainy level headed one but no one listens. I find it all fairly frustrating. But these are well written lively books. Fairly violent but it's a book with a sword on the cover so........
I actually think it's well written, but unfortunately, find the protagonist, Hal, unbearable. Unbelievably arrogant, obnoxious, self-absorbed and plain stupid. Stubbornness and Independence are generally typical characteristics of heroes/heroines but Hal is extreme, and therefore unlikable. The love and devotion expressed by the other characters just doesn't work. She's ungrateful, rude and entitled... And there aren't scenes, insights or any indication as to why anyone would care so for her. I certainly didn't. No growth or awareness. Liked the story, but Hal is awful. Too bad.
Kate Cudahy has crafted a wonderful tale with "Hal", a story of a female duelist and how she finds the love of her life in Meracad, a nobleman's daughter. All of which sounds like a simple, straightforward story line but Hal is anything and everything but. From Hal's tumultuous upbringing which is shrouded in secret and Meracad's struggles for independence in an era where women were identified through their husbands and fathers, Hal is an amazing journey of two women who manage to find love with each other and their struggle to keep that love as unexpected events unfold around them.
Kate Cudahy's writing is straightforward and quick and she has mastered the ability of presenting stunning visuals and tension-filled scenes with beautifully executed dialogue and description. Hal is not your average main character. Before you're done with this read, you'll be exasperated with her. And impatient when it comes to her and her impetuous decisions. But one thing you won't be is bored. I highly, highly recommend this story and I'll be keeping an eye out for any future writing by Ms. Cudahy. I have a feeling she's going to be an author to watch when it comes to future well-written LGBT stories.
I clicked one-dimensional for characters but I think that the author was trying to illustrate youth (maybe?) and so their personalities seemed trite and irritating to me. The book was well-written and a light bit of fluff to pass an afternoon. I am not sure if it was interesting enough to compel me to read the second one. I might, though, just to find out where the author goes with it.
I had a lot of fun reading this and do appreciate books that have a f/f relationship at the front-and-center, as well as an eye for action scenes. Plus, Hal is such a chaotic force of nature; even if you don't like her, it's hard not to want to find out what happens next to her. However, I couldn't in good faith give it full stars because a lot of it felt underdeveloped, especially the central relationship, some of the major plot twists (especially the one close to the end that I won't specifically name because of spoilers) and a lot of the characterization. I wouldn't say every character came across as one-dimensional, but I can only pinpoint a few times where I felt like a character had either developed in some way or seemed more three-dimensional than the others. And I realize it's a fantasy novel, but the worldbuilding also seemed pretty underdeveloped and at times jarringly anachronistic? I don't mind anachronisms in fantasy if there's a reasoning behind it, but I didn't see that happen as I read.
If you don't mind worldbuilding and developmental details and just want to read a swashbuckling, fast-paced story about interesting characters, then you might like this book more than I did.
